You have probably seen the billboards, the blogger posts, the banner ads, the news spots, and maybe even the TV commercials (apparently people still watch TV?). Even a faux demonstration of grammarians protesting the gross...

Huntridge Theater, 2010

The Huntridge Theater got a bright, shining new coat of white paint over the weekend, in large part thanks to hundreds of volunteers who picked up brushes to help out with the effort.

Many of those volunteers left with clothes splattered with paint but smiles on their faces. Others took the opportunity to sign up for future efforts to restore the 69-year-old edifice at Maryland Parkway and Charleston Boulevard dominated by a distinctive obelisk.

Once a diseased-looking patchwork of taupe, tan and stucco, the obelisk is now a bright, shiny white.

“It’s a Vegas legend, this place,” said Bill Simons, lead guitarist of Happy Campers, one of a dozen or so bands that played during the two-day paint party. “I saw, shit, I saw a tons of shows here.”

Cody Sullivan, a Lied Middle School student, signed up for the effort Saturday afternoon.

“I just wanted to paint, I suppose,” Sullivan said. “Maybe see some bands.”

Sullivan’s too young to have seen the last bands that played there, including the Circle Jerks, who played the night the roof literally fell in, in 1995. But he’s a fan of Sublime and other punk-rock bands.

A trio of Las Vegas entrepreneurs, including Michael Cornthwaite, owner of the Downtown Cocktail Room and The Beat coffee shop on Fremont St., formed the limited-liability company Huntridge Revival this year as a vehicle to buy and refurbish the knocked-about warren of buildings that make up the theater. So far they’ve raised more than $200,000 towards an effort that may ultimately cost $15 million. LAUNCE RAKE
