We’re not even caught up on sleep from this year’s Electric Daisy Carnival and already there’s talk of the 2014 edition — namely, whether it will be carried out over two weekends a la Coachella.
EDC/Insomniac founder Pasquale Rotella, who often interacts with his festival guests through social media, recently tweeted that contrary to rumors, EDC 2014 will take place during only one three-day weekend, the dates (and ticket on-sale) of which have yet to be announced.
Though demand might be there — 2013 sold out before the lineup was even announced — two consecutive weekends of EDC could be a tough experiment. Acts playing Coachella can travel out during the week in between the fests to play shows outside the region. EDC’s acts, however, would be pressured to play local club and pool gigs, or participate in the EDMbiz conference during the festival downtime, or stay for the new EDM awards ceremony debuting next June. EDC’s biggest competitor, Ultra Music Festival, did two consecutive weekends in March, but the well-established Winter Music Conference and Miami Music Week took place during the week — and Ultra has already announced it will go back to one weekend in 2014.
Rotella did reveal one other detail: This year’s attendees will have the first crack at 2014 passes. Which, after last month’s resounding success and, er, rave reviews, will mean newbies may face a tougher time getting into that lone weekend.
