It only seems like only, oh, 10 years ago, when we of the Vegas queer camp would hit the “Fruit Loop” west of the Thomas & Mack for the closest approximation of LGBT bar-hopping commonly enjoyed in cities with gayborhoods. Now, the Paradise Road/Naples Avenue landscape not only has less nighttime foot traffic, it has one less bar, as reports of longtime dive The Buffalo closing have been confirmed for September (though no official date has been set).
However, the other traditional gay-bar cluster at the Commercial Center could be staging a comeback. With new kid on the block Club Metro (located just across the unconventional strip mall on East Sahara Avenue) celebrating its grand opening on July 20, and enduring gay watering holes Spotlight Lounge and Badlands Saloon now renovated, marketing efforts have picked up to rebrand the area to the LGBT community — now called QCentral. In fact, would-be and regular patrons can text “qcentral” to 74455 and they’ll receive promotions and discounts for participating bars (which already commonly offer drink specials and liquor/beer busts) and businesses.
