[MUSIC] Thursday, Aug. 9
We listened through Yellow Ostrich’s Fade Cave EP three times as a way to force ourselves to put a finger on what the New York trio is doing. First of all, there are no instruments besides a drum machine. All melodies and vocals are a capella. Rhythmically, it leans world beat, with subdued Lady Smith Black Mambazo-styled hoots and yips, often done in a round and repeated instead of moving the song along linearly. If you would want to see an acapella version of your favorite softy indie rock band, you’d probably want to watch Yellow Ostrich.
