Picks of the Week: The Black Keys and New Year’s weekend music picks

Sunday-Monday, Dec. 30-31

The Black Keys

Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney are our heroes. It’s two pretty normal dudes playing dirty rock ’n’ roll. While we’ve seen them with bells and whistles, the roots remain in the gritty simplicity of the songs, going back to 2002’s The Big Come Up. And even though now they’ve polished up, played bigger stages than they can run across without breaking a sweat, and get speaker time at more Starbucks coffee shops than their younger selves would care to admit, they still retain their dirty sides in a way that soccer moms can appreciate and bikers aren’t embarrassed to spin. Probably why their NYE gigs at The Joint will be sardine-packed. But be sure to get there early. Openers Divine Fits alone are worth driving to the Strip on the worst boulevard day of the year. It’s a supergroup of folks from Spoon (Britt Daniel), Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs (Dan Boeckner) and New Bomb Turks (Sam Brown). And with their fuzzy, simple indie rock, they make perfect foreplay for the big bang. 9:30 p.m.; The Joint, 4455 Paradise Road, 693-5583, $95-$171
