Picks: Ray Kurzweil

[LECTURE] Sunday, Jan. 27

Big thinker Ray Kurzweil’s talk is called “How to Create a Mind” — a name that’s scoffable until we consider his inventions, all firsts in their fields. Kurzweil dreamt up early photo scanners, music synthesizers that mimic orchestra instruments and, because that wasn’t enough, machines that can read — probably better than you can. For these reasons, when Kurzweil says he can unravel the nature of human thought, we believe him. 7:30 p.m.; Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center, 361 Symphony Park Ave.,,749-2000, $24-$59
