[books] Saturday, Oct. 13
When it was published, the subtitle of Geoff Schumacher’s book Sun, Sin & Suburbia was “The Essential History of Modern Las Vegas.” For the newly issued and vigorously expanded paperback edition, Schumacher modestly removed the word “essential.” That doesn’t mean it isn’t. The book is as close to required reading as it comes for anyone who wants to understand this #%&*! town — the pre-boom years, the boom-boom years and, thanks to several new chapters, these post-boom years. (Note: We’d offer this praise even if Schumacher weren’t a former editor and publisher of this paper.) At this gathering, he’ll discuss the book and the city and sign copies.
1 p.m., Nevada State Museum, Springs Preserve, 309 S. Valley View Blvd., 822-8735, free (well, the event; you gotta pay for the book)
