Growing Up Gypsy

[LIT] Saturday, July 14

A few words with Oksana Marafioti, author of the new memoir American Gypsy. She’ll be part of Growing Up Gypsy, which also includes music, dancing and art. What’s the biggest misconception the rest of us have about Gypsies? That we’re all alike, all 10-plus million of us living the exact same lifestyle, sharing the exact same morals and worldviews. How did growing up in that culture impact the way you see your place in America? In both Romani and American cultures, one constantly strives for individualism, even under threat of disapproval and criticism. Because I have a voice, America has always felt like a place where I belonged. 2-4:30 p.m., Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road, www.lvccld.org, free
