FOOD REVIEW: ROSE. RABBIT. LIE.

Jan 29, 2014 3:41pm

You have probably seen the billboards, the blogger posts, the banner ads, the news spots, and maybe even the TV commercials (apparently people still watch TV?). Even a faux demonstration of grammarians protesting the gross...

The Speed of Sound in Seawater: They drink your milkshake.

[SHRED]

TUESDAY, JAN. 2

Casket Raider

We don’t know much about these bands, but we love the names of those vying for applause at the Cheyenne Saloon’s regular apocalyptic metal jams. If not the Cheyenne Saloon, then who? With Opticleft, Invalid Prefix, Suffer by Degrees. 8:30 p.m., The Cheyenne Saloon, 3103 N. Rancho Blvd., $5.

[PUNK]

FRIDAY, JAN. 3

The People’s Whiskey

Bouyed by a strong CD release, The People’s Whiskey combine punk power with country esthetics… like so many of the great rock and roll bands. With Surrounded by Thieves, Three Rounds, Geezus Cryst and Free Beer, and Sector 7-G. 10 p.m., the Double Down Saloon, free.

[HOMEGROWN]

FRIDAY, JAN. 3

The Pax Trend

The Pax Trend from Las Vegas deserve some lovin’. They’ve got one foot in 1960s garage rock and one foot in a harmonic future. With the Known Pleasures, the Mass Distractors, the Musket Vine. All this for $5! 9 p.m., The Cheyenne Saloon, 3103 N. Rancho Blvd., $5.

[MORE PUNK]

SATURDAY, JAN. 4

Bloody Ale

Smash those eardrums with Vegas’ own Bloody Ale. With Bounty Hunter Brothers, Cause of Death, Iwanaga. 10 p.m., the Double Down Saloon, free.

[BASS]

SATURDAY, JAN. 4

Totally Bass-ted

With bass-heavy sounds from Zaiaku, Imposter, Jayrod, Rize and Quiet. 9 p.m., The Beauty Bar, $4.

[ROCKERS]

SATURDAY, JAN. 4

L.A. Guns

L.A. Guns turned 30 this year. The band’s many current and former members have drifted in and out of the Los Angeles nebulae of guitar-based hair-rock bands that came to prominance in the 1980s, including Guns ‘n’ Roses, Hanoi Rocks, Faster Pussycat, Motley Crue, etc. Meanwhile, you can catch founding member Tracii Guns over at the Rock Vault at LVH. With Sin City Sinners. 9 p.m., Vinyl at the Hard Rock Casino, $29.50.

[MIXED METAL]

SATURDAY, JAN. 4

Hyena

Hyena is an “indie-electro” band; they’ll be appearing with Oscillation, Aenimus, Appirations, Treason, Aechoes, 16 Hours Remain - bands described as everything from deathcore to straight metal, whatever that means anymore. So something for everyone at this all-ages show? 5:30 p.m., Eagle Aerie Hall, 310 W. Pacific Ave., Henderson, $14.

[HOOPS]

SATURDAY, JAN. 4

Runnin’ Rebels v. Air Force

This is the conference home opener for UNLV’s basquet-ball players on the hardwood. Go Rebels! 7 p.m., Thomas & Mack Center, $20 (potentially cheaper from the parking lot).

[THEATER]

SUNDAY, JAN. 5

Heart and Music Cabaret

Six close-knit characters explore love, loss, romance and family in an intimate tapestry of 17 pieces from various Broadway musicals. 2 p.m., The Onyx Theatre, $15.

[SINCERITY]

MONDAY, JAN. 6

The Speed of Sound in Seawater

Comparisons to Death Cab and Port O’Brien and other guitar-based, post-emo pop-rockers are obvious, but SSS are among the cream of this crop, with harmonies, chime-y guitars and a nod to prog/math rocks. With Apex of Apathy, The Abstract Giraffe, Garbage Tree, The Oranges and West End Knock Out. 5:30 p.m., Eagle Aerie Hall, 310 W. Pacific Ave., Henderson, $13.

[ABBA RAWKS]

TUESDAY, JAN. 7 - SUNDAY, JAN. 12

MAMMA MIA!

Putting aside the well-grounded conspiracy theory that ABBA and Led Zeppelin are in fact the same band - you’ve never seen them together, have you? - there is no better way to short-circuit your critical thinking processes and enjoy yourself than listening to ABBA’s greatest hits, which this full-throated musical thoughtfully provides. 7:30 p.m., Saturday-Sunday matinees at 2 p.m., The Smith Center-Reynolds Hall, $26-$129.

UPCOMING…

Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman does the annual 2014 State of the City performance Jan. 9 at the Las Vegas City Hall (drink once for school reference, twice for charter school)… Ex-Runaway and feminine guitar god Lita Ford at Vinyl, Jan. 10.
