Music
by JEFF INMAN
THERE'S something scary about Brian Williams being the harbinger of cool. The NBC Nightly News anchor is about as hip as a IRS agent -- which is the point when you're behind the big desk dousing the hopes of millions with the latest economic numbers or facts about health care reform. But now Williams has launched his own little web show, BriTunes -- yeah, seriously -- where he interviews his favorite bands, talks about his recent finds and basically geeks out like a Williamsburg trust-fund-baby at a vintage record store. It's almost scary to watch -- except for the fact he actually knows what he's talking about. Fear & Lounging
In a generalized Vegas music scene that still veers too easily and often toward stultifying sameness, relief came swift and unexpectedly this past weekend, and from both its high kingdoms: rock and dance. Stories of both follow, but rock comes first due to its inherent primacy over dance music. Anyone who disputes that can ask themselves when the last time was they heard The Killers sample something originally crafted by one of our local resident DJ purveyors of Top 40 and mash-ups. Don't take offense, DJs or dance-a-philes; it's just about who's influencing who.
