BLM. NPS. DOD. The majority of the land in Nevada belongs to one of these federal agencies, including some of our best places, like Red Rock National Conservation Area and Great Basin National Park. It's always been a little ironic that the federal government would own so much real estate in libertarian Nevada. Could it also be a little confusing?
The good folks at ProgressNow Nevada produced a nice little video guide to our public lands, with illustrations by Reno artist Erik Holland and voice over by sometime CityLife contributor Launce Rake. The video was created to honor National Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 29. At the end of the video, there is a link to a form that will enter viewers into a contest to win artwork used in the video.
The short, two-and-a-half minute movie also tells you how to help protect our public lands, by urging Congress not to vote for changes that would weaken protections for wilderness and other areas. Watch the video, and then celebrate Public Lands Day by visiting Lake Mead, Mt. Charleston, Red Rock or Area 51, if you're feeling adventurous.
