For over 2,800 people, The XX's Oct. 10 show at The Cosmopolitan's Boulevard Pool was a memorable, sublime concertgoing event ... until about a half-hour in, when the English trio was rained off the stage. The delay in announcing any possible refund policy, as well as a Facebook statement from the band saying it would "be back soon," hinted at a possible rescheduled show.
Despite valiant efforts, The Cosmpolitan could not bring The XX back for a future show. Here's the rest of the statement from the property:
"At this time, The XX is unable to reschedule a concert date at The Cosmopolitan. Ticket-holders are invited to exchange their ticket for an upcoming show including Sunset Sessions (Nov. 8-10) or the show of their choice during next year’s Thursday’s Live concert series (beginning in April). Guests can contact Ticketmaster over phone at 1.800.745.3000 or email via the Ticketmaster website. If tickets were purchased in person at The Cosmopolitan Concierge Desk, please return in person to exchange a ticket. For questions regarding a ticket exchange, please contact the hotel at 702.698.7778."
What that means: Anyone who bought a ticket through the Cosmopolitan can trade their XX ticket for a Sunset Sessions pass, hold on to it for a future Thursday Live gig, or request a refund. Those who went through Ticketmaster must make a refund inquiry through its customer service department.
There are no automatic refunds to ticketbuyers, mostly because, as printed on the ticket, the venue does not guarantee refunds if the show is canceled. The decision to offer refunds upon request for XX ticketholders is a customer service policy, says a property rep.
The Cosmopolitan has a bit of bad luck this fall with concerts. An August 11 show with Bloc Party and Santigold was also marred by rain. And a Nov. 24 Morrissey show was recently scuttled due to an illness in the singer's family.
Furthermore, The XX had to cancel East Coast gigs this week due to Hurricane Sandy. However, the band also said on its Facebook page that "we'll have another announcement coming later in the week, including information on these shows and a new run of U.S. dates in early 2013." (UPDATE: Those dates are here.)
Unless a future local show is to happen in April and the band can't announce due to a potential Coachella slot, Las Vegas won't be included in The XX's 2013 U.S. tour plans, despite having drawn so many people and such an enthusiastic response. What a disappointment.
This story has been updated from an ealier version, as a Cosmopolitan box office staffer had given CityLife some incorrect information regarding the show's refund policy.
