In a move we're sure will be widely appreciated by both musical fans and the valley's large Latter-Day Saints population, The Smith Center has nabbedThe Book of Mormon for its 2013-2014 Broadway Las Vegas season. As it did with Wicked, which ran this fall for six weeks, downtown's new performing arts center won out over the Strip casinos in hosting a huge, in-demand Broadway musical.
But don't queue up for tickets just yet. The widely heralded production -- which has won nine Tonys and a Grammy, among other awards -- is set for a summer 2014 run.
For the unfamiliar: The Book of Mormon is a musical religious satire written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez — which should set off red alerts for those of the virginally eared variety — following two Mormon missionaries sent to a village in Uganda, where the two young Utah-nites have trouble getting their words across. Mostly because they're going on about how men should be fucking frogs to cure AIDS, and not fucking babies to accomplish the same feat (because that will lead to burning in the fires of Mordor).
Calling it totally crass isn't too far from the truth. But calling it not incredible would be, especially given its accolades. Never before have we been more excited to be really offended.
